Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are not always a sign of gum disease. Generally, bleeding gums are a symptom linked to a gum disease such as gingivitis, periodontitis, trench mouth or other oral disorder. But it is not always the case !

Causes of bleeding gums

If your gums bleed easily but they are not swollen, this can be a sign of a health condition involving other organs, not necessary the mouth.
One of the health issues listed bellow can be the cause of bleeding gingiva:

-Anemia
-Cirrhosis (Chronic damage to the cells of the liver)
-Hemophilia
-Leukemia
-Multiple Myeloma
-Platelet function disorder
-Von Willebrand's disease (Chronic bleeding disorder)


If both swolling and bleeding occur, usually it is a an oral health disorder such as :

-Impacted teeth
-Oral cancer
-Periodontitis
-Tooth abscess
-Tooth decay
-Tongue disorders
-Trench mouth


Gums may bleed occasionally, when using a hard toothbrush or when brushing vigorously.
If after eliminating the probable reasons mentioned above, the gums continue to bleed, one should consult a health care professional in order to find the real cause of the problem and to treat it accordingly.
